Who is Liable if a Semi Truck Loses a Wheel on the Highway?
A fully inflated commercial truck tire mounted on a steel wheel weighs well over 200 pounds. When a semi-truck travels at 70 mph, those wheels generate immense kinetic energy. If a wheel detaches from the axle—a terrifying event known in the industry as a "wheel-off" accident—it becomes a high-speed, unguided missile. It can bounce over concrete median barriers, crush the roofs of oncoming passenger cars, or smash directly through a windshield.
Unlike a standard collision where two drivers share the blame, a wheel-off accident is purely a mechanical failure. However, commercial truck wheels do not simply fall off by accident. Understanding exactly who is liable if a semi truck loses a wheel on the highway requires a deep forensic investigation into the motor carrier's maintenance garage.
Trucking defense attorneys will frequently argue that the wheel fell off due to a sudden, unforeseeable defect or striking a massive pothole (an "Act of God"). In reality, metallurgical forensics almost always prove that wheel-off accidents are the direct result of prolonged, severe maintenance negligence by the trucking company.
The Three Leading Causes of Liability
When an attorney hires a mechanical engineer to inspect the sheared wheel studs, they are looking to pin liability on the maintenance crew for one of three fatal errors:
If mechanics fail to use a calibrated torque wrench and leave the lug nuts too loose, the heavy wheel will begin to vibrate violently at highway speeds. This constant "wobble" slowly chews away the metal threading until all 10 lug nuts suddenly sheer off at once, launching the tire into traffic.

Rust streaks radiating outward from the lug nuts are a massive, neon warning sign that the nuts are loose and grinding metal.
