If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), mark your calendar—May brings two payments instead of one. Due to quirks in the payment schedule, SSI beneficiaries will get their May check on the 1st and their June payment early on May 30th.
📅 Why Two Checks in May?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) issues SSI payments on the 1st of each month. But if that date falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment moves up to the last business day before. Since June 1st is a Sunday, the June payment will arrive on May 30th.
This means:
- May 1 - May's SSI payment
- May 30 - June's SSI Payment (Early Deposit Alert!)
As a result, SSI recipients won't get a payment in June, similar to what happened in March. The same pattern repeats in August and November.
💳 What About Regular Social Security Payments?
For most retirees and disability beneficiaries, Social Security payments follow the usual Wednesday schedule in May:
Born 1st-10th? → Payday
Birthday 11th-20th? → Money arrives
Born 21st-31st? → Check clears
If you started receiving benefits before May 1997, your payment arrives on the 3rd of the month.
👥 Who Gets SSI?
SSI supports 7.4 million Americans with disabilities, limited income, or seniors (65+). About a third also receive Social Security benefits, meaning some will get three deposits in May (two SSI checks + one Social Security payment).
🔮 What's Next?
This two-payment month happens again in August (August 1 & August 29) and October (October 1 & October 31).
